Last year the Society presented a submission to the Parliamentary Health Committee in support of the Surrogacy Improving Arrangements Bill. The bill was a private members bill, which the Government has now adopted - with a few changes. Now that the bill has been adopted by the Government it is likely to become law.
The bill is designed to provide a dedicated legal framework for surrogacy, as well as address the rights and responsibilities of all parties, prior to the child being born.
Key changes include removing the need for parents to adopt their child born by surrogacy, establishing a register for babies so they can access more information about their birth origins later in life, and provide clarity over payments surrogates can receive from parents. Commercial surrogacy would remain banned.
