A recent survey of Nurses Society of New Zealand members found inadequate resourcing for health services because of insufficient  funding to be the predominant issue of concern. Inadequate funding being the principal reason for staffing pressures.

The survey invited members to identify up to three issues under each of three broad headings: nursing; the health sector; and wider national and global issues.  The survey found.

Key nursing issues

o   Staffing levels and staff mix, including concerns about having the right number and mix of staff to meet patient needs

o   Workload and acuity, including increasing workloads and higher levels of acuity

o   Pay and employment conditions, particularly in some sectors

Key health-sector issues

o   Inadequate funding for health services

o   Access to care, including concerns about people being unable to access the services they need

o   Government policies, including concerns about policies that undermine public health services and the potential for a shift towards increased privatisation.

Wider national and global issues

o   Climate change and its implications for society and health

o   Government actions and policies that undermine te Tiriti o Waitangi and equity

o   Disinformation, particularly misinformation opposing vaccination.

The survey highlights members’ strong concerns about the resourcing of nursing and health services, alongside broader issues affecting public health, equity and the wellbeing of our communities.
