STATEMENT ON THE ISRAEL-HAMAS WAR:  ATTACKS ON HOSPITALS CONDEMNED

International humanitarian law designed to protect healthcare services and facilities, as well as to ensure the safety of civilians and healthcare workers, should be fully respected by all parties to the conflict.

The enormous sacrifice of healthcare workers providing care to all people whilst their personal safety is at risk – at a time when they are dealing with their own loss and caring for injured family members – is to be commended.

The inexcusable killing of civilians, including healthcare workers, and the failure to protect both patients and healthcare workers in this terrible conflict, is an indefensible tragedy.

Hospitals, health services and health providers should never be targets of military action.  The destruction of a health system is unacceptable.

There needs to be an immediate permanent ceasefire.  All governments should be pressing for this, without a qualification.

Additionally food, fuel, medical and other aid supplies should be allowed into Gaza in quantities proportionate to the needs, as a matter of urgency, to ensure that humanitarian agencies can deliver to those in dire need.   Denial of food, fuel and medicine to civilians is a war crime.
