The Nurses Society of New Zealand has welcomed the decision by Health New Zealand announced today to fund an extra 380 additional nursing, midwifery and health care assistant full-time positions this financial year.
Nurses Society director David Wills says the fact that it includes an extra 94 positions for emergency departments is especially positive.
“These additional staff are clearly needed to help relieve current pressure on staff and to ensure quality service delivery.”
The positions are additional to current vacancies.
An extra 380 nurses is a modest increase given the size of Health New Zealand and current need, but it is still significant and as such is good news.
