The Society is one of the signatories to an open letter organised by the Council of Medical Colleges (CMC) calling for direct to consumer advertising of prescription medicines to be prohibited.

Amongst OECD countries, Aotearoa New Zealand and the United States are the only countries that allow such advertising of prescription medicines.

Direct to consumer advertising of prescription medicines has been a long standing concern of health professionals and widely opposed by groups representation health professionals.

The letter to the Minister of Health Ayesha Verrall was well received and changes are in the pipeline that may mean consumer advertising of prescription medicines is likely to be banned.

CMC is a body representing 17 medical colleges (medical specialist organisations).
