Delays in the opening of Tōtara Haumaru, a new building and service at North Shore Hospital, are causing concern.
The new building is part of new services at North Shore Hospital planned by the last government. While the new building was completed on time last year it remains largely unused because of funding and staffing issues.
When fully operational, Tōtara Haumaru will add an extra 150 inpatient beds, plus eight more operating rooms and four endoscopy suites, to North Shore Hospital.
Te Whatu Ora funding pressures and staffing issues are largely behind the delayed opening.
Nurses Society director David Wills says that the extra services are needed now.
"The service was always designed to be commissioned in stages, but the current delay and uncertainty over funding is concerning."
