To date nine nurses have received ACC payouts for occupationally acquired COVID-19.
Data obtained by the Society under the Official Information Act from ACC shows that last year ACC received 13 claims for occupationally acquired COVID-19. One claim was withdrawn, and ACC approved 12 claims.
Nine of these successful claims were from nurses and two were for other health professionals. One is listed as "other".
The mean payment was $7,580. These costs exclude public health acute service payments. This is because treatment costs in public hospitals are provided for by an annual service agreement between ACC and the Ministry of Health.
The numbers are relatively low compared to overseas, because the country has had a successful response to the pandemic.
Nonetheless the data shows the occupational risk to nurses and other health professionals even when best infection control practices are observed.
More generally, in the last calendar year ACC received 10,921 work related claims from health sector workers, including 3,095 from “nursing and midwifery professionals”.
